Smoke Detector Information
Smoke alarms save lives, but only if they are installed and working. The majority of fatality fires occur in homes without working smoke alarms.
Install:
The City of St. Marys Fire Department recommends that you install at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home. Smoke alarms are designed to wake you up if a fire starts while you are sleeping. Be sure your smoke alarms are near bedrooms and other sleeping areas in your home. Free smoke alarms are available for qualified home owners.
Test:
When was the last time you heard your smoke alarm? Battery-operated alarms should be tested once a month to make certain they are working.
Change:
Replace the batteries in your smoke alarm twice a year. The City of St. Marys Fire Department recommends you do this when you change your clocks.
Replace:
Replace your smoke alarm every ten (10) years. If you don't know how old your smoke alarm is, or if it is ten (10) years or older, replace it as soon as possible.

Juvenile Firesetters Intervention Program
The primary purpose of the St. Marys Fire Department Juvenile Firesetters Intervention Program is to reduce the incidence of fire play and fire setting through early identification, evaluation, education and treatment. Juvenile fire play is extremely dangerous and should not be dismissed as a phase or simple curiousity. Statistics show that nearly 50 percent or more of all fires are started by children who play with matches, lighters, and other ignition sources. Juvenile firesetting causes an estimated $900 million dollars in property damages annually. Sadly, the majority of the victims of child-set fires are the children themselves. The best way to understand a child's firesetting behavior is to look at its context and motivation. While curiosity about fire is common, some children light fires for other reasons. Very often, the behavior is a symptom of larger school, family or emotional problems. If you have a child who might be at risk, please contact our office immediately. All information is confidential.
